As regular customers will know, Reds have to be very good indeed to make it onto our list and this is a truly stunning red wine from Maison Williams Chase in Luberon. Vinified in clay amphora situated in the Roman Cellar beneath the Chateau. A facinating and ancient process, capable of superb results, the grapes are simply de-stemmed and put into the amphora pots. They are then manually plunged during fermentation to maximise skin contact and the extraction of flavour. The unique shape and permeability of the amphorae allows the wine to micro-oxygenate during the aging process, naturally enhancing fresh fruit characteristics while preserving elegance and structure. Awarded 92 points in Decanter, Sept 16.
Bill and Eveline, Buyers for Rose-wine.com visited Chateau Constantin in 2016 and saw first hand the amazing cellar and the Amphorea in action. Coupled with the extraordinary wine making skills of Dale Clarke this is a winning combination and made for a truly memorable visit.
Lovely aromas at the start, hinting of ripe red fruits, flowers, and perhaps a little blackcurrent. The taste is smooth, balanced and dry, rich and peppery, a lovely, warm climate, red wine. The dryness is not acidic and to our tasting panel the wine seemed superior and smoother than some classic red wines. A Syrah / Grenache blend, the vinification in clay provides a wonderful, unique flavour, clearly different from more modern and conventional methods and leaves you with a warm glow. There's a very long and satisfying aftertaste.
Our tasting panel here at Rose-wine.com meets every couple of months to sample new wines. It is composed of friends with various levels of wine experience who enjoy these occasions, but are frank in their opinions knowing that this really helps. The food served is chosen to compliment the wines being tasted and makes for a realistic tasting event.
This is one of the best new red wines we have tasted for several years, served in big glasses it was a showstopper, people simply stopped eating to savour it and express their enjoyment. We are delighted to have it in our range. It's lovely to try an Amphora made wine, great label too - You will not be disappointed!
